
Field Hockey Edges No. 15 American 2-1

HARRISONBURG, Va. - - The 13th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team used goals by Karah Nall and Hayley Turner and stellar defensive play to edge No. 15 American University 2-1 Sunday at the James Madison Field Hockey Stadium.
"Our defensive unit played a solid, composed and determined second half against a dangerous and talented American University team," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Our defensive corner unit was outstanding, led by Rachel Hollenbach's intelligent and aggressive charge. There is no doubt that we simply outlasted a team that should do extremely well this season."
The first half featured a battle with both teams trading and shots and corners through the before American broke through with an unassisted goal from Lotte va de Mierop at the 12:43 mark.
Louisville answered four minutes later when senior Karah Nall notched her first goal of the season with penalty corner assists from senior Jenna Ahern and junior Hayley Turner.
The teams entered halftime with the score knotted at 1-1 after the Cards held a 7-6 edge in shots and both teams had four penalty corners apiece.
American drew two early second half corners, but came up empty and the Cardinals capitalized on the momentum when Turner dribbled down the field to deliver her first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner at the 45:59 mark in the game.
The Louisville defense continued to stand strong in the midst of a flurry of American shots and corners -including two corners in the closing minutes of the game. In the second half, the Eagles outshot the Cards 12-1 and had a 14-0 advantage in corners.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Conrad (3-1) posted one save in the win while American's Hannah Weitzman (1-3) collected two stops.
U of L (3-1) will return to Trager Stadium for its home opener against No. 14 Ohio State Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
