LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville's women's lacrosse team was recognized by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) for its academic achievements, as the team was tabbed an IWLCA Academic Squad, the Colorado-based organization announced Friday.
"I am so proud of our student-athletes' performance in the classroom this past year," head coach Kellie Young says. "Earning academic squad honors was a goal set by the team last fall, and every member of the squad worked diligently to achieve that goal."
In order to earn the distinction, schools are required to have a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is the Cardinals' first in their three-year history, and Louisville was one of six BIG EAST squads that qualified for the honor.
Louisville completed the 2010 campaign with an 11-6 overall mark, finishing the year ranked in the Top 10 nationally in four different categories: draw controls (No. 2 with 15.41/game), scoring offense (No. 3 with 14.71 goals/game), ground balls per game (No. 7 with 21.24/game) and caused turnovers (No. 8 at 10.94/game). Individually, first team all-BIG EAST selection Bergan Foley ranked No. 1 nationally in goals (78) and goals per game (4.59).
