University of Louisville tennis player Austen Childs wrapped up a successful summer by winning the USTA Kentucky State Closed Tennis Championship at the Louisville Boat Club.
"Austen has not cooled down," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "After a strong regular season, undefeated in the Big East tournament, reaching the finals of the NCAA's and then clinching a Davis Cup victory for his country, he is still hot."
The senior from Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand won four straight-set matches en route to the title. After a first-round bye, he defeated Alex Menzel 6-0, 6-1. He followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Michael Cunningham. A 6-1, 6-2 decision over Travis Curran sent him to the finals where he defeated top-seeded Eric Quigley 6-2, 6-3 to claim the championship.
"Defeating a very special and homegrown player like Eric Quigley is not easy," said Ecarma. "He played extremely relaxed and won the big points with big shots. Austen's game has really developed, especially his first serve and his confidence has grown immensely."
