ATHENS, Ga. - - University of Louisville junior Austen Childs defeated Baylor's Denes Lukacs 6-4, 6-4 in the NCAA Singles Championship Round of 16 Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Childs becomes the first player in program history to advance to the quarterfinals of the national championship where he will face No. 10 Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas on Saturday.
"Coach Ecarma and I had a pretty good game plan today," said Childs. "We worked on keeping the ball high and mixing up my serves. I played very well and it worked."
Childs, No. 19 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings picked up straight set wins over Baylor's 15th-ranked Lukacs, avenging a 6-3, 6-2 loss earlier in the season. He improves his overall record to 31-11 on the season.
"Austen was much more relaxed today," said Ecarma. "He knew he was fortunate in surviving yesterday's match when things did not go his way. This is the third player in a row that he `flipped.' That is our term when someone reverses a previous loss to a win. I also think the `military' we put on the team in the last five weeks of the regular season is still reaping rewards. Austen's level of fitness seemed to be so much better than his last three opponents."
A day after becoming only the second All-American in program history by reaching the round of 16, Childs is now the first to advance to the NCAA Singles quarterfinals, surpassing Michael Mathers' run in the 1998 NCAA Championship.
