
DePaul Sweeps Louisville Softball in BIG EAST Conference Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to visiting DePaul 2-0 and 15-4 in both teams' BIG EAST Conference opener. The teams will play a single game Sunday at noon at Ulmer Stadium.
In the first game of the day, costly errors allowed the Blue Demons to score runs in third and fourth innings. In the third, Sean Plese drew a leadoff walk, Tara Voss followed with a hit and a miscue on the play allowed Plese to score.
DePaul added an insurance run in the fourth when Brittney Yniguez singled and took second on Bree Brown's base hit. She advanced to third on a passed ball and an error on the play sent her home to give the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead.
The Cards had runners in scoring position in the first and fourth, but could not capitalize. In the first inning, Alicja Wolny and Jordan Trimble drew back-to-back walks to put runners on with two outs, but DePaul starter Becca Heteniak got Colby Wherry to fly out to right field to end the inning. In the fourth Wolny connected on a double to start the inning, and was lifted for pinch runner Chelsea Jordan who moved to third on Wherry's hit, but was thrown out at the plate while trying to score.
Kristen Wadwell (10-7) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and striking out six.
Heteniak (8-8) got the complete game shutout, scattering two hits and fanning eight.
In the nightcap, Voss led off the game with a solo home run to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 lead.
Alex Morocco's two-run single in the second gave DePaul a 3-0 lead. Plese reached on a fielder's choice and Voss doubled to set up the score.
The Blue Demons tacked on three more runs in the third as Plese and Voss connected on RBI doubles while Morocco delivered an RBI single to make it a 6-0 game.
In the fourth inning DePaul used seven hits, two walks and an error to put up a nine spot. Simone Ashkar and Yniguez opened the frame with infield singles and Brown's walk loaded the bases. Plese drew a two-out walk to plate Ashkar and Voss was hit by a pitch to score Yniguez. A three-base error on Morocco's infield single put the Blue Demons up 11-0. Ashkar, followed with a two-run homer. Yniguez doubled and came home on Marie Thompson's base hit to give DePaul a 15-0 lead.
The Cards got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Wolny doubled and came around to score on Wherry's hit. Chelsea Bemis' two-run shot over the left field fence made it a 15-3 game.
Louisville got one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Roth delivered a one-out single and Wolny's base hit placed runners at first and second for Wherry's RBI single to make the score 15-4.
Collins (6-3) took the loss, giving up 10 runs, seven earned, and striking out three in 2.1 innings. Wolny was 2 for 2 with a run and Wherry was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
U of L (20-12) and DePaul (16-11) will meet Sunday at noon in the series finale.
