
Softball Tops Cal State Northridge

The No. 23/24 University of Louisville softball team used 13 hits, including home runs by Melissa Roth and Alicja Wolny, to beat host Cal State Northridge 12-9 Thursday afternoon. The win snaps the Cards' four-game losing streak
"It wasn't pretty, but we got the win," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Again, I was pleased with the offense, but we've got to come out with a more complete game."
The Matadors used a hit, three walks and two illegal pitches to jump to a 2-0 lead in the first. Lauren Olivas led off the inning with a single, took second on a passed ball and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jennifer Mosier walked and Olivas came home on a wild pitch. Jaci Carlsen walked and Tracy Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jaclyn Rymer's walk plated Mosier to make it a 2-0 game.
Northridge added a run in the second when Karla Chaparro reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Mosier's RBI single to make it a 3-0 game.
The Cards responded with five runs in the top of the third. Tori Collins and Melissa Roth singled and Kristin Austin drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Pinch runner Katelyn Mann and Roth scored on Vanessa James' single and Austin came home on a Matador error to tie the game at 3-3. Alicja Wolny followed with her second home run of the season to give Louisville a 5-3 lead.
The Matadors pulled within a run in the home half of the third when Allen reached on an error, Krystal Raphael was hit by a pitch and Kristen Mihm delivered a two-out RBI single.
Louisville used three hits and three walks to put up another five spot in the fourth. Mann opened the frame with a single, took second on sacrifice bunts by Jordan Trimble and Brittany York and came home on a wild pitch. Roth, Austin and James walked to load the bases for Wolny who was hit by a pitch to score Mann. Colby Wherry's two-run single brought Austin and James home and Bemis' base hit plated Wolny to make it a 10-4 game.
Northridge got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth. Mosier walked. Carlsen followed with a single and took second on the throw. She proceeded to steal third and a Cardinal error sent her home to make the score 10-6.
Roth's two-run homer in the fifth gave the Cards a 12-6 lead. Trimble led off the frame with a walk to set up Roth's shot down the left field line for her seventh home run of the season.
The Matadors answered yet again in the home half of the inning. Pinch hitter Christina Saenz singled and Mihm was hit by a pitch. An error allowed Olivas to reach and both runners to score, a second error on the play sent Olivas home to pull Northridge within three runs, making it a12-9 game.
Kristen Wadwell (7-5) got the win, allowing seven runs, but only two of them were earned, on five hits and striking out three in 5.2 innings. Collins picked up her second save of the season, holding the Matadors scoreless in the seventh inning. Wherry was 3 for 4 with two RBI. Roth was 2 for 4 with three runs and two RBI. James and Mann also had two hits in the game.
Hannah Fraijo (5-5) took the loss, giving up eight runs, six earned, on 11 hits and striking out five in 6.0 innings. Mihm was 2 for 3 with a run and Olivas finished with a 2 for 5, two run performance at the plate. Northridge drops to 13-14 on the season.
U of L will face New Mexico and Purdue Friday in the Judy Garman Classic.
