
No. 15 Louisville Softball Beats Northern Illinois 5-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The No. 15/17 University of Louisville softball team defeated Northern Illinois 5-3 Sunday in the final game of the Cardinal Classic.
The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard with four runs in the first inning. Melissa Roth was hit by a pitch and Vanessa James walked. Consecutive doubles by Chelsea Bemis, Jordan Trimble and Colby Wherry gave the Louisville a 4-0 lead.
Louisville added another run in the second when Roth's RBI double plated Jennifer Esteban who had reached on a leadoff bunt single.
U o f L starter Chelsea Leonard took a no-hitter into the sixth inning when a double by Adriana Sanchez scored Zoe Sinner who reached on a leadoff walk to put the Huskies on the scoreboard.
Northern Illinois added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Dani Parrish singled and Sinner walked. Back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Sanchez and Whitney Owens pulled the Huskies within 5-3 and place the tying run at first base. Cardinal reliever Kristen Wadwell retired Jennifer Barnett to end the game.
Leonard (4-0) got the win, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Wherry was 2 for 2 at the plate, while Esteban was 2 for 4 with a run and a stolen base.
Monica Segura (0-3) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on three hits. Sanchez paced the Huskies (1-8) with a 2 for 3, two RBI performance at the plate.
The Cardinals (13-2) are back in action March 5-7 at the Oklahoma/Oklahoma State Challenge.
