HOUSTON - - The No. 21/22 University of Louisville softball team suffered its first loss of the season, a 2-0 decision at the hands of No. 14/16 Ohio State Sunday in the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic. The Cards drop to 4-1 on the season, while the Buckeyes improve to 3-1.
"This weekend was a great test for our team," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was pleased with our defense and all three of our pitchers had some strong performances. If there was any downside, it would have been our offense. It's important that this team works to be more aggressive in their at bats. Looking at the caliber of teams we played this weekend, for us to go 4-1 was a great start to the season and solid foundation for us to build on."
Ohio State got on the scoreboard early 2-0 lead when Dee Dee Hillman drew a leadoff walk and Sam Marder followed with a two-run homer for the only scoring of the game.
The Cards had a chance to score in the top of the third when Kristin Austin drew a walk, and moved to third on Jordan Trimble's double. Vanessa James reached safely on a bunt single to load the bases with one out. Ohio State starter Lindsay Bodeker struck Melissa Roth out and got Brittany York to hit into a fielder's choice which saw Trimble out at third to end the inning.
Tori Collins (1-1) took the loss, giving up two earned runs in one inning of relief. Kristen Wadwell held the Buckeyes scoreless on two hits and struck out five in five innings. Jennifer Esteban, Bemis and Trimble accounted for the Cards' three hits in the game.
Bodeker (1-1) got the complete game win, giving up three hits and striking out seven.
U of L is back in action Feb. 19-20 at the Charleston Southern Tournament.
