Louisville made its ninth NCAA second round appearance on Saturday night.
With tonight's loss Louisville falls to 4-5 (.444) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and 13-21 (.382) all-time in NCAA Tournament action.
With tonight's loss Louisville falls to 0-8 all-time against the Boilermakers.
Today marks the second time Purdue and Louisville have squared off in an NCAA Tournament match. Previously, Purdue and Louisville faced off in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, a 3-2 decision won by the Boilermakers.
Louisville won set three by a score of 25-18. The Cardinals have not been swept this season despite being down two sets to none on four occasions. Louisville fell to 2-2 this season when they were down two sets to none.
Junior Gwen Rucker recorded a career-high 13 kills against Purdue. Her previous career-best was 12 accomplished against Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 19, 2008, and against Ohio University on Aug. 29, 2010.
Freshman Caitlin Welch set a career-high with four aces against the Boilermakers. She recorded back-to-back aces in the second set. Her previous best was three aces against Marquette on Nov. 12. Currently Welch has 24 aces, good for second on the team.
Louisville recorded back-to-back blocks to jump out to an early lead in the fourth set. Freshman Emily Juhl and junior Gwen Rucker teamed out on the first block with Rucker and freshman Taylor Brauneis joined forces on the second block.
