
No. 10 Field Hockey Defeats Providence 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The tenth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team wrapped up BIG EAST Conference play with a 2-1 win over host Providence College Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 12-5 and 5-1 in league play. Providence drops to 4-13 (0-5 BIG EAST).
"I am extremely proud of the persistence and resilience that Team Cardinal displayed today against a feisty and dangerous conference opponent," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin.
The teams played through a scoreless first half in which the Friars outshot the Cards 9-4 and Louisville held a 4-3 edge in penalty corners. Goalkeeper sophomore Erin Conrad posted six saves for the Cardinals and PC keeper Shannon DeStefano had two stops to send the game into halftime tied at 0-0.
Providence broke through at the 43:25 mark when Julie Ruggieri scored off of a penalty corner play with an assist from Ashlyn Hudson.
The Cards responded three minutes later when senior Nicole Youman scored off of a direct penalty corner shot with assist from junior Hayley Turner and senior Tuli Lim to tied the game at 1-1 at the 46:53 mark.
With less than nine minutes remaining in the game, Lim pulled the Louisville ahead when she connected on a feed from freshman Kelsey Rosenmeier for the 2-1 game-winner.
Louisville outshot PC 10-4 in the second half and held a 14-13 edge in the game. The Cardinals also had a 5-2 lead in corners in the second half and a 9-5 advantage in the game. Conrad (12-5) had seven saves in the win, while Kathi Weidman collected seven stops for the Friars.
U of L will stay on the road and travel to New Hampshire for a noon matchup Sunday.
