Former Olympian Carlos Almeida won three events in a meet highlighted by stellar Cardinal individual performances, however, the University of Louisville swimming and diving team fell to rival Tennessee Thursday night. In all, the Cardinals won eight events including a sweep of the women's 200-breast.
The Volunteers edged the men 197-103 with the Lady Vols prevailing 186-113 in the first dual meet of the season for the youthful Cardinal squad.
Almeida took top honors in the 100-breast, posting a time of 55.21. Freshman Kameron Chastain touched third in 56.52. Almeida won the 200-breast with a time of 2:01.16. The junior, who competed in the European Championships last summer, also blew away the field in the 200-IM, finishing two full seconds ahead of the field in 1:50.70.
Brendon Andrews, U of L's sprint threat, won the 100-free with a time of 45.24. He added much needed points with a second in the 100-back (49.71).
U of L got a lift from Pedro Oliveira, who won the 100-fly and took second in the 200-fly, going 1:48.62, just two tenths of a second behind the winner.
For the U of L women, Eszter Povazsay, a member of the Hungarian National Team, surged to first place in the 200-back, out-touching Tennessee by one-one hundredth of a second in 2:00.69.
Therese Bergstrom touched first in the 200-breast (2:16.94) as the Cardinals went one-two-three in the event. Fanny Lilliestrom was second in 2:17.09 with Gisselle Kohoyda in hot pursuit, touching in 2:18.64.
Lilliestrom also won the 200-IM, posting a time of 2:04.76.
