Hitters Emily Juhl and Lola Arslanbekova each had 11 kills to lead the University of Louisville to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-20 sweep of visiting DePaul in BIG EAST volleyball action Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Arena.
"Our freshmen are stepping up and had a strong weekend for us," said U of L head coach Leonid Yelin. "We are young and we have taken some lumps early but the overall experience of playing such a strong pre-conference schedule is paying off now that we are in BIG EAST play."
U of L hit a season-high.411 with eight aces and 50 digs to push their record to 10-5 and 5-1 in the BIG EAST. DePaul hit .106 with no aces and 30 digs as the Blue Demons remain winless in six league matches and post a 1-18 season mark. The Cardinals were led by Caitlin Welch's 13 digs and Maci Wachtel had a pair of aces and seven digs. Taylor Brauneis had a match high 33 assists and added three kills.
U of L took a 13-2 lead early in the first set and used .440 hitting as the Cardinals never trailed in the 25-11 rout. Emily Juhl and Tanya Lukyanenko each had five kills apiece for U of L. After the longest unanswered point run of the season, the Cardinals took a 9-0 lead in the second set and never looked back. Lola Arslanbekova came off the bench with a vengeance and had eight kills on eight swings with no errors and had eight digs. There was no let up in the hitting, as the Cardinals pushed it to .444 and added three aces in the set.
With their backs against the wall, the Blue Demons came out strong after the break and took an early lead at 6-5. The Cardinals turned on the afterburners and pushed to a 21-15 lead. DePaul called timeout at 23-16 to try to stem the momentum but Arslanbekova nailed two straight kills for the win.
U of L is idle until next Saturday when it takes on league-leading Bearcats in Cardinal Arena. The Bearcats have beaten both Purdue and Illinois, both of which have beaten perennial powerhouse Penn State this year.
