LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Sophomore midfielder Hayley Turner scored two goals and added an assist as the 13th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team opened play at Trager Stadium with a 4-0 win over Miami (Ohio) Saturday afternoon. The Cards improve to 2-1, while Miami drops to 0-3 on the season.
"This was a great way to open the home season against a very aggressive opponent," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I was pleased with how we were able to stick with our game plan. We stayed poised and earned the win."
The Cardinals wasted little time getting the offense started as Turner opened the scoring at the 2:51 mark in the game. Junior Nikki Auker's pass from the right side of the circle found Turner in the middle to put Louisville up 1-0.
Turner struck again when she connected on a rebound off of Miami goalkeeper Abbey Huck's pads to make it a 2-0 game at the 20:05 mark. The Cards entered halftime with the 2-0 lead after holding a 3-1 edge in shots and a 1-0 penalty corner advantage.
Miami rattled off two shots in the opening minutes of the second half, but Louisville senior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby picked up a save and the Cardinal defense held strong to maintain the shutout. In the second half, the teams were even with four corners each, while the Cards held a 6-5 edge in shots.
The Cards capitalized on their third penalty corner of the half to increase the lead to 3-0 at the 44:45 mark. Junior Rachel Hollenbach's initial shot found the back of the cage with assists from Turner and junior Tuli Lim.
Auker capped the scoring with 32 seconds remaining in the game when she connected on Turner's feed from the right side of the cage for the 4-0 final.
U of L outshot Miami 9-6 and held a 5-4 edge in corners in the game. Bustanoby (2-1) had two stops in 65:04. Redshirt freshman Erin Conrad also combined in the shutout.
Miami's Huck (0-3) allowed two goals in 23:00 and Kelsey Dean surrendered two goals and posted one save in 47:00.
