Two Cardinals players competed in the Red Flight. Sophomore Sumit-Prakash Gupta fell to Illinois State's Matj Zlatkovic 6-1, 2-6, 10-8 and ISU's Alexander Pelaez defeated sophomore Andrew Carter 6-4, 7-5.
"Our guys gained very valuable experience this weekend," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They were competitive in every single match they played and this should give them momentum going into the Indiana Invitational."
Sunday's play determined the champions in singles and doubles. Illinois State's Timon Reichelt took the `A' Flight by outlasting Western Kentucky's Tomi Krug 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4). The Redbirds also took the Flight `B' crown when Filip Miljevic topped Tennessee Tech's Josh Girling 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the finals. Tennessee Tech spoiled Illinois State's bid to sweep the singles titles' by virtue of Justin Kirstein's 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Illinois State's Micah LeMoine.
In doubles action, Illinois State's Pelaez and Miljevic topped Tennessee's Edward Jones and Bryan Swartz 8-6 to clam the `A' championship while Tennessee's Taylor Patrick and Max Stevens defeated Lendl Smith and Jonas Imhof of Vincennes 8-6 in the finals of the `B' flight.
U of L is back in action Sept 18-20 at the Indiana Invitational.
