AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Jennifer Jones scored her first career goal but it was not enough as the Louisville women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 road decision to Texas on Friday night at Mike A. Meyers Stadium.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 2-3 overall in 2009, while the host Longhorns improved to 2-3 on the season.
"Tonight was an unfortunate result for us," said Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "Certainly, Texas played very well, but we created a number of good chances. We're doing a lot of things right, but the things we aren't doing right have been the difference. We are confident that our young group will learn from these experiences and continue to build on what we have done right in the games to come."
Playing in the Lone Star State for the first time since 2002, the Cardinals saw Texas score first as Nikki Arlitt curved a corner kick into the goal in the 27th minute of action for a 1-0 advantage. The goal was the first of the season for Arlitt.
After trailing at the halftime break, the Cardinals evened the score at 1-1 in the 50th minute as Jones, a Louisville native, connected from 25 yards away with a shot from the left side that went over Longhorns' goalkeeper Alexa Gual and into the goal. Junior Kate Cunningham also picked up her first career assist on the goal.
However, the tie score was short-lived as the host Longhorns pulled back in front for good just one minute later as Leah Payne connected on a free kick from Arlitt in the 51st minute for her first goal of the season and the final 2-1 margin.
Overall, Louisville was out-shot 13-12 by Texas, though the teams were even with six shots on-goal each. The Longhorns also held an 11-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Jones and Cunningham led the Cardinals with three shots each, while Arlitt led the Longhorns with three shots on the night. Gual finished with five saves for Texas in goal, while Cards' freshman Taylor Vancil closed the night with four saves overall.
Up next, Louisville will conclude its weekend trip to the Lone Star State and continue its four-game road stretch at Baylor on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.
