DURHAM, N.C. - - Freshman Haley Jurich scored a pair of goals as the University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Delaware 5-2 Sunday afternoon in the Champions Challenge, hosted by Duke. The Cards improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Blue Hens drop to 0-2.
"I was happy with how we came out with an attacking mindset today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We had complete team contribution in the game and our defense was consistent against a dangerous Delaware attack. We look forward to playing at home next weekend."
U of L junior Nicole Youman opened the scoring with an unassisted penalty corner goal at the 7:35 mark. Junior Karah Nall quickly added to the lead less than two minutes later when she connected on a feed from Youman.
Delaware's Amanda McCardell pulled the Blue Hens within a goal at the 16:23 mark.
It took the Cards a little over a minute to answer, when junior Rachel Hollenbach netted sophomore Hayley Turner's pass to make the score 3-1.
Haley Jurich gave the Cards a 4-1 lead with less than three minutes left in the first half as Youman dished out her second assist in the game. The Cards entered the break with a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 5-2 penalty corner edge.
The Blue Hens opened the second half with a goal from Casey Howard to cut the lead to 4-2.
Jurich's second goal of the game - this time with an assist from junior Jenna Ahern - completed the scoring at the 66:37 mark for the 5-2 final.
U of L senior goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby (1-1) collected two saves, while Delaware's Noelle Diana (0-2) had eight stops. The Cards outshot the Blue Hens 18-8, while the teams had six penalty corners each.
The Cardinals (1-1) will play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 5 against Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Louisville will play host to Indiana at 1 p.m.
