Sophomore attacker Emily Dashiell's two goals and game-high six draw controls were not enough as the University of Louisville fell 20-8 to No. 10-ranked Notre Dame in the first ever meeting between the two schools in BIG EAST lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at U of L Lacrosse Stadium.
The Cardinals (7-4, 1-3) were outshot 38-29 and the Irish scooped up 32 ground balls to the Cardinals' 20. After trailing in draw controls 8-5 in the first half, U of L came back strong in the second have with 11 to ND's 6 for a 16-14 edge. The Irish (11-2, 4-1) were able to score on seven of their nine free position attempts while U of L converted just three of six.
"There is a reason Notre Dame is a top ten team," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "It was disappointing that we weren't able to put together 60 minutes of good lacrosse."
The Irish lit up the scoreboard early, with two quick goals in the first four minutes of the game. Jillian Byers scored on a pass from Gina Scioscia, who then scored herself 30 seconds later on a free position attempt. U of L's Bergan Foley scored on a free position attempt at 25:03 to make it 2-1. The Irish then went scored six unanswered goals with Scioscia adding two more during that run, pushing the score to 8-1.
U of L got a shot of offense when Lianne Bobal scored two quick goals on a free position shot and an unassisted goal at 6:39 and 5:34 respectively The Irish snuck one final goal in before the half when Maggie Tamasitis scored from a pass by Jillian Byers at 2:17 to give UND a 9-3 lead at the half.
The Cardinals came out and scored the first two goals of the half when Dashiell scored at 27:58 and Bergan Foley scored on a free position attempt to come within four at 9-5 at the 24:23 mark.
The Cardinal flurry sparked the Irish who answered with five straight goals, two by Shaylyn Blaney and two by Ansley Stewart. With 15:20 remaining in the game, Ruby Devine scored from Katie Oliverio and then Danielle Hale scored unassisted for the Cardinals at 12:31. But the Cardinals could score just once more as the Irish added six tallies to the board pushing the final to 20-8. The Cardinals are idle until April 11 as they gear up to host the No. 6-ranked Georgetown Hoyas at 1 p.m. at U of L Lacrosse Stadium
