Cards Win Eight Games in Final Weekend of Spring Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team wrapped up the spring season with an 8-0-1 record at Trager Stadium on the weekend of April 4-5. The Cards finished the 2009 spring season with an impressive 13-0-1 overall record.
"I am thrilled that the dedicated work that Team Cardinal committed to since January has been rewarded with excellent play and encouraging improvement throughout our spring competitions," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "It is our first undefeated spring season in my 11 year Cardinal history and we absolutely plan to build on this spring's championship foundation."
On Saturday, April 4, the Cardinals hosted the Longstreth Midwest Spring League with teams from Michigan State, Ball State, Ohio, Indiana and Miami (Ohio). In the first game, Louisville played Michigan State to a 0-0 tie. The Cards defeated beat Indiana 2-1, concluding play in the Longstreth Midwest Spring League in which they finished undefeated with a 6-0-1 record.
Also on Saturday, the Cards defeated Iowa 3-2 behind goals from sophomores Karah Nall, Hayley Turner, and Nicole Youman.
On Sunday, April 5 Louisville hosted its annual 7v7 Tournament which featured eight teams including: Northwestern, Ohio, Michigan State, Missouri State, Miami (Ohio), Iowa, Bellarmine, and a mixed team consisting of U of L alumnae and coaches from the participating schools.
The Cards finished regular pool play with a 4-0 mark while outscoring their opponents 15-1. Louisville then went onto the crossovers where they defeated the mixed team 3-2 and advanced to the championship game where they faced Iowa. Junior Kayla May scored the deciding goal in penalty stroke to preserve the Cardinals' undefeated mark in spring play.
U of L finished the 2008 season with a 14-7 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in the BIG EAST Conference en route to earning a share of their third straight regular season title. U of L spent the entire season in the NFHCA top 20, reaching as high as No. 11 and earning their second trip to the NCAA tournament.
