LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team will travel to Belleville, Mich., this weekend for a series of races against nationally ranked crews from Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa.
"The team is really looking forward to this weekend's racing in Michigan," said Cards' head coach Laura Fogt. "This will be our first time traveling and racing at this course and we couldn't be more excited to line up against all three crews. All three teams that we're racing showed great speed this past weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic and moved up significantly in the rankings as a result."
The Cardinals' 20th ranked varsity eight crew of coxswain Ashley Edwardson, Anastasia Prokopenko, Sam Kayser, Mallory Hamman, Kristin Falovo, Sarah Fiske, Liz Van Zeyl, Katie Rorer and Allison Pelette will face No. 4 Michigan, No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 21 Iowa in races at 11 a.m., and 3 p.m. Louisville moved back into the top 20 this week after two second-place finishes to No. 5 Michigan State at last weekend's Dale England Cup Regatta.
"We were disappointed to not be further up in the rankings this week, so the team knows they must go into this weekend ready to make more of a statement than they did last weekend," Fogt said. "I'm absolutely confident in their ability to do just that. The team has had a great week of practice and came off the water this week feeling really good about their speed, but still hungry for more.
"The varsity eight continues to push and push the limits. They are having a lot of fun right now in their boat and it great to watch. They have been consistent day in and day out with their practices and that consistency has rolled over onto the race course. They have a high level of trust and respect for one another and I believe that will play a big role in their continued development as we move closer and closer to our BIG EAST and NCAA Regional Championships."
Louisville's second varsity eight crew of coxswain Mandey Erdman, Kelly Traynor, Sha'Lori Moore, Laura Cers, Chelsea Haack, Lauren Mensch, Katie Scordo, Kira Lawson and Samantha Seldon will race on Saturday at 10:36 a.m., and 2:36 p.m.
"I'm very proud of the way the second varsity eight continues to come together," said Fogt. "They've had some speed bumps and obstacles along the way, but they've continued to push forward and are beginning to see the payoff. I look forward to seeing how that translates to boat speed on the course and I know the rowers do as well."
The Cardinals' varsity four crew of coxswain Anna Kirk, Annie Stadig, Shannon Elias, Kristen Soden and Ruthie Fligor will race at 10:12 a.m., and 2:12 p.m., while the second varsity four crew of coxswain Kimberly Feinberg, Lisa Grace, Anna Zwanzig, Chelsea Reeves and Jill Reeves will race at 9:48 a.m. and 1:48 p.m.
"The varsity fours are continuing to develop in power and technical efficiency," said Fogt. "We are continuing to look for the fastest lineup and will use this weekend as another opportunity to see who is moving the boat the best."
The Cardinals will also race in the novice eight races at 9:24 a.m., and 1:24 p.m., in Belleville.
