Sophomore attacker Bergan Foley's two goals were not enough as the University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 15-4 to No. 8-ranked Syracuse in the Cardinals' inaugural game in the BIG EAST Friday night in Syracuse.
"The team needed to step up like we have been doing this year but no one was able to do so," said U of L head coach Kellie Young. "They scored against sets we had prepared for, so it was a little frustrating. It wasn't a strong effort but we just have to rebound and be ready for UConn on Sunday,"
Syracuse outshot the Cardinals 33-19 and had 15 draw controls to the Cardinals' 6. The Cards committed 16 turnovers and had a 16-13 ground ball edge.
The Orange jumped out to a 5-0 lead, with Christina Dove adding two during that stretch. Foley put the Cardinals on the board with an unassisted goal at 22:49. After the Orange answered with a goal a minute later, Aimee Dixon scored on a free position shot at 19:28. Halley Quillinan took the Orange up six with a goal at 12:45 before U of L's Liz Lovejoy brought U of L to its closest margin of the game at four with a goal at 10:35.
Syracuse added three more before the half to take a 10-3 lead into the lockerroom. The Orange held on to their momentum in the second half when Dove sparked a 5-0 run with a pair of goals to take SU up 15-3. Foley scored on a free position goal at 5:15 to finish the scoring on the game.
The Cardinals are 6-2 and 1-0 in the league. The Orange improves to 7-2 and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
