LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 16th ranked University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Old Dominion 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 15-3 on the season, while ODU drops to 15-10.
"I can't begin to describe how impressed I am with Old Dominion," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They were bouncing around like electrons in doubles. They outfought us at home to win the doubles point. Coach daSilva and I were impressed with how hard ODU fought - and at one point, the match seemed tilted their way. Simon Childs and Viktor Maksimcuk came through for us. Viktor Maksimcuk transformed from the doubles `scapegoat' to the singles hero. I'm really proud of Robert Hall, Austen Childs and Alejandro Calligari for completely dominating in singles. The player of the match is Alejandro Calligari."
The Monarchs grabbed the doubles point to start the match as the 33rd ranked duo of Aleks Seleznev and Tobias Fanselow combined to upset Louisville's eleventh ranked Austen Childs and Simon Childs 8-5 at the top seed. Matthey Fawcett and Ben Marks edged Louisville's Viktor Maksimcuk and Tim Barnoud 9-8 at the two-spot to clinch the point. U of L's Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari picked up an 8-2 win over ODU's Yakov Diskin and Alex Funkhouser at the three-spot.
In singles action, the Cards quickly evened the score when Calligari rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Diskin at No. 4. Hall topped Funkhouser 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 while No. 40 Austen Childs defeated No. 68 Seleznev 6-3, 6-2 at the top seed to give the Cards a 3-1 lead.
Old Dominion notched a point on court six when Louisville's Andrew Carter suffered his first singles loss of the spring season in a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Kris Muzalewski.
With the Cardinals leading 3-2, courts 2 and 3 went into third sets. Louisville's No. 3 seed Maksimcuk dropped his first set to Fanselow 6-4, but regrouped to win the next two 7-5, 7-5 to clinch the match. In the three spot, Simon Childs edged Fawcett 7-6 in his first set. Fawcett fought back to take the second set 6-4, but Childs prevailed with a 6-3 victory in the third set for the Cards final point.
U of L returns to action on Wednesday when the play host to Indiana at 2 :30 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. That match was originally slated to be played at 5 p.m., but has been moved to accommodate outdoor play.
