LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Indiana 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"Indiana came in with a lot of energy and confidence after winning their last five matches in a row and moving up in the rankings," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We knew we had a battle ahead of us. Our players responded by winning the doubles point with Alejandro Calligari and Robert Rotaru closing one of their many doubles points this year."
The Cards opened the match by taking the doubles point. The 11th ranked duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Santiago Gruter and Jeremy Langer 8-5 at the top seed. Robert Rotaru and Alejandro Calligari teamed to beat Peter Antons and Maxime Armengaud 8-5 at the three-spot. IU's Lachlan Ferguson and Stephen Vogl picked up an 8-5 win over Viktor Maksimcuk and Tim Barnoud at No. 2.
"Our top four singles positions looked powerful," said Ecarma. "None of them dropped a set and they seemed in control. Simon Childs is our player of the match."
Louisville got five more wins in singles to secure the match. No. 40 Austen Childs topped Ferguson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1. No. 85 Maksimcuk beat Gruter 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Simon Childs posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Langer at the three seed. Calligari completed another straight set win with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Armengaud at the four spot. Robert Hall dropped his first set to Will kendall 6-2, but rebounded to win the second set 6-2 and prevailed 10-7 in the third at No. 5.
The Hoosiers picked up a point at the No. 6 spot where Stephen Vogl defeated Rotaru 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
"We are getting ready to head into a tough road swing against some extremely impressive challengers," said Ecarma. "Tulsa was No. 13 and Oklahoma State was No. 22 in the preseason rankings and we will have to play our absolute best tennis to compete with them on the road."
Louisville (16-3) will now go on the road to Tulsa, Okla., where the Cards will face No. 29 Oklahoma State on March 27 and No. 35 Tulsa on March 28.
