LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville rowing team debuted at No. 20 in the preseason USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll released on Thursday.
"It's great to kick off the season by breaking into the top 20," said Cards' second year head coach Laura Fogt, whose crew is the only BIG EAST team in the preseason poll. "This is a great starting point and we will continue working hard as a team to build speed in all of the boats we'll be racing this season."
Louisville, which closed 2008 just outside the top 20, will open the spring racing season next week with a spring break trip to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where the Cardinal crew will race Duke and Buffalo on Sunday. They will spend the rest of the week training with scrimmages against Tulsa and possibly Dartmouth.
Overall, the Cards' 2009 schedule features races against three crews ranked in the preseason top 20, including No. 7 Michigan State (April 3), No. 14 Wisconsin (April 11) and No. 15 Michigan (April 11).
Yale leads the way in the preseason poll with the No. 1 ranking and 22 of 25 first place votes. Brown is second and is followed by No. 3 Washington, No. 4 Stanford and No. 5 California.
