The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team scored first against the University of Louisville, but quickly found itself on the wrong end of seven unanswered goals by the Cardinals enroute to U of L's 11-5 win Sunday afternoon in New York.
Liz Lovejoy, Emily Dashiell and Lianne Bobal each had hat tricks to lead the Cardinals with Tara Restly adding an assist.
Louisville keeper Jen Heup had seven saves. The Cardinals had 39 ground balls, led by Kelsey McDowell's eight. U of L's Ashley King had a game-high six caused turnovers to lead the Cards. In all, Manhattan College had 34 turnovers to U of L's 28. Louisville outshot the Lady Jaspers 27-17.
"We were anchored by a solid performance in cage by our Jen Heup," said U of L head coach Kellie Young.
Leading the Cardinal offensive attack was led by Liz Lovejoy who had six shots, five on goal, with Emily Dashiell adding five shots. The Cardinals were without last year's leading scorer Bergan Foley, who was injured during warm-ups.
"Our attack struggled to find a rhythm which was responsible for the majority of our unforced turnovers," said Young. "The highlight of the game was a feisty and unified defense."
Manhattan got on the scoreboard first at the 28:13 mark when Caralyn Hickey scored off a Convery assist. But then Louisville went on a tear with six straight goals to take a 6-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, the Cardinals made it a 7-0 run before Manhattan finally answered to make the score 7-2 at the 24 minute mark. Lianne Bobal had three goals during that run. Louisville scored about seven minutes later, but then Manhattan went on a 3-0 run in the next five minutes to close the score to 8-5. But a 3-0 run in the game's final five minutes clinched the game for Louisville.
The Cardinals return to action March 6 for their home opener at U of L lacrosse stadium at 6:30 p.m.
