The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team has announced the 2010 women's lacrosse schedule for the upcoming spring season according to Cardinal head coach Kellie Young.
The Cardinals will once again play a slate that features six teams that were ranked last year in the final IWLCA top 20, four of whom participated in the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament. The BIG EAST has expanded to nine teams, giving U of L an eight-game conference schedule prior to the BIG EAST Tournament which will be hosted by Rutgers May 6-8 at Piscataway, N.J.
Kellie Young's Cardinals begin their season on Feb. 19-20 with a pair of home games against Sacred Heart and Manhattan College before hitting the road for eight straight in what will be a challenging stretch of schedule. The non-conference portion of the road stretch begins with U of L taking on Binghamton (Feb. 26) and Oregon (March 6). The Cardinals will hopefully have the kinks ironed out by that time when they travel to Ohio State March 13 to face the Buckeyes, who ended the season ranked No. 15 in the nation. March 17 will be the date at Vanderbilt as the Cardinals face the Commodores, who finished the season ranked No .12 and made an NCAA appearance.
The Cardinals start their BIG EAST campaign with a bang, facing the Fighting Irish in South Bend on March 27. Notre Dame was ranked No. 6 in the country last May and was one of three BIG EAST selections in the NCAA. The Irish finished the 2009 campaign ranked 6th overall and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinal, defeating Vanderbilt before losing at North Carolina. U of L will end the month of March at Cincinnati (March 30).
In April, the Cardinals open with a two-game break in BIG EAST action with Old Dominion (April 2), and Longwood (April 4) which closes out the grueling stretch of road games.
The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of U of L lacrosse stadium against Loyola on April 9 before facing powerhouse Georgetown on April 11. Louisville then takes a break from league play, hosting Jacksonville on April 17 before returning to BIG EAST play with UConn in on April 23. The Orange from Syracuse will invade April 25 to end the five-game homestand. The Cardinals will end the regular season with two road trips, one against Rutgers on April 30 and the other against Villanova on May 2.
The Cardinals are hoping to make the BIG EAST field as they did a year ago in their first year in competition as a league member. This year, the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers will be hosting the championship which begins May 6.
The six ranked teams that finished 2009 ranked in the IWLCA top 20 teams include Notre Dame (#6), Syracuse (t#8), Georgetown (t#8), Vanderbilt (#12), Ohio State (#15), and Loyola (t#18). From that group of ranked teams, Georgetown, Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame participated in the NCAA tournament.
