
Swimming and Diving Complete Day Two

After the second day of competition at the Purdue Invitational, the University of Louisville swimming and diving team stayed in the hunt with the men still in first and the women standing second. In all, the Cardinals won eight races and set a school record against a highly competitive field.
The Cardinal men (616.5) lead Ohio State (609), Purdue (537), Missouri State (216.5) and Michigan 11. The Cardinal women (507.5) trail Michigan (523.5) but lead Arkansas 397, Purdue 370, Ohio State (311) and Missouri State (177).
In the first event, the Cardinal 200-medley relays team each touched second. The foursome of Alana Berrocal, Therese Bergstrom, Raine Thompson and Liz Halet posted a time of 1:40.95. Carlos Van Isschot , Carlos Almeida, Tim Collins and Kris Findorff combined for a time of 1:29.73.
Carlos Almeida won the 400-IM with a time of 3:53.07 with fellow Cardinal finalists Michael Pryor touching third (3:58.38) and Luke Wakefield was fifth in 4:02.45. For the women, Leslie Van Winkle was just edged, finishing second in 4:15.33. Cardinal Fanny Lilliestrom (4:21.70) was seventh and Amanda Henleben (4:29.66) was eighth in the A-final.
Pedro Oliveira touched first to win the 100-fly in 48.82. Teammate Carlos Van Isschot was third in 49.19 and Tim Collins was fourth in 50.20.
Brendon Andrews won the 200-free with a time of 1:38.50 with freshman Alex Burtch coming in fifth with a time of 1:40.91. For the women, Liz Halet was the top finisher at 4th 1:49.44, Sarah Andrews was sixth 1:49.75 and Leslie Van Winkle was eighth 1:53.57.
Carlos Almeida won the 100-breast in 54.45 and Sergiu Daghid put up a time of 55.24. Therese Bergstrom's first place made it a Cardinal sweep of the 100-breast, when she posted a time 1:01.35. Heather Holtom was fourth 1:03.25 and Fanny Lilliestrom went 1:03.72 and Sara Hartman was 1:04.96, good for eighth.
In the 100-back, Eszter Povazsay touched first in a school record 54.65 with teammate Alana Berrocal adding points with a fourth with a time of 55.90 and Raine Thompson touching sixth in 56.85. For the men in the same event, Carlos Van Isschot was just edged, touching second in 48.48. Peyton Bobo cruised into fifth with a time of 50.74. Chase Grimes was sixth in 51.03 and Brendon Andrews rounded out the A-final, going 53.07.
Diver Hannah Gadd put up the highest marks in the 1-meter springboard with a score of 303.55.
In the final event of the evening, the men took the 800-free relay when Brendon Andrews, Pedro Oliveira, Alex Burtch with Carlos Almeida anchoring touching first in 6:38.67. For the women, Leslie Van Winkle, Sarah Andrews, Fanny Lilliestrom and Liz Halet touched fifth.
