
Swimming Sweeps BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In meets against Pittsburgh and West Virginia, Louisville sophomores Carols Almeida and Therese Bergstrom combined to win 12 races. For their efforts they were named the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week. In a win over the Mountaineers, the Cardinals won 23 races and set six pool records in Morgantown, W.Va. UofL also won all but five races against Pittsburgh to complete its winning weekend.
Almeida won all seven races in which he competed in at Pittsburgh and West Virginia. He took individual victories in the 100 breast (57.01), 200 breast (2:04.56), 500 free (4:33.66), 200 individual medley (1:52.00) and 400 individual medley (3:59.14). The second-year swimmer also helped the Cardinals to wins in the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley. He swam the breast stroke in each event, posting split times of 25.31 and 55.92.
Bergstrom was equally impressive also going unbeaten. She posted first-place times in two individual races and three relays. The sophomore won the 200 breast twice, recording a time of 2:18.68 in her first swim and knocked off over three seconds in her second effort to set a provisional NCAA qualifying mark at 2:15.56. Bergstrom also won the 100 breast (1:03.51) and swam the breaststroke leg in victories in the 200 medley relay (25.57 split) and 400 medley relay (1:03.23).
