
Women's Soccer Squeezes Orange 2-0

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Led by goals from Giselle Mangal and Jennifer Jones and a strong defensive effort, the Louisville women's soccer team returned to its winnings ways on Sunday with a 2-0 triumph at Syracuse.
With the victory, Louisville improved to 4-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 in BIG EAST Conference action, while the host Orange dropped to 4-6-3 overall and 1-3-1 in league play. The Cardinals also halted a season-long three-game losing skid with the win.
Following more than 20 minutes of scoreless action, Louisville gained command in the 22nd minute as Mangal, a sophomore from Mississauga, Ont., connected for her second goal of the season and the seventh of her career for a 1-0 Cards' advantage.
Louisville maintained that one goal advantage into the halftime break, and then closed out any hopes of a Syracuse rally in the 62nd minute as Jones, a sophomore and a Louisville native, scored her second goal of the season for the final 2-0 margin. Freshman Ashley Racette earned her first career assist on the goal by Jones.
In goal, Louisville freshman Taylor Vancil earned her third career shutout with three saves, while Eli Bennett-Hattan finished with two saves for the Orange.
Overall, Syracuse finished with a 10-8 advantage on shots, though Louisville did have a 4-3 edge on shots on-goal. Junior Kate Cunningham led the Cards with two shots in the game, while Hayley George came of the bench to lead Syracuse with three shots. The host Orange also held a 9-5 margin on corner kicks and fouls were even at 5-5.
Up next, the Cardinals will conclude their five-game BIG EAST Conference road stretch next weekend at Georgetown (Friday, 3 p.m. ET) and at Villanova (Sunday, noon).
