WASHINGTON DC- - Nicole Youman and Hayley Turner each scored a pair of goals to help lift the 15th ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Georgetown University Saturday at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex at American University.
The Cardinals (11-7) close BIG EAST Conference play with a 4-2 record, earning the No. 3 seed in the league tournament where they will play Connecticut Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Providence College.
"I'm pleased with the team attack today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "This is the best movement and speed above the 50 yard line we've had all year."
The Cardinals scored first at the 6:21 mark in the game, as senior Julie Anne Smith deflected Youman's shot into the back of the cage on Louisville's third penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead. Youman added to the lead at the 23:08 mark, when she drove down the right end line and tipped the ball into the side of the cage. With less than four minutes remaining in the first half Turner would get on the board with a shot that beat Georgetown goalkeeper Briana Pereira to the right side to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Georgetown's Katy Wingo put the Hoyas on the board early in the second half when she chipped in a Kristen Volpe pass on a penalty corner to close the gap to two, at 3-1.
Turner would score her team-leading 13th goal of the season for Louisville midway through the second half when she collected the rebound after her first hot and punching it into the back of the cage to take a 4-1 lead. Youman capped the scoring in a breakaway, where she went right around a sliding Pereira to give the Cardinals a 5-1 lead.
The Cardinals outshot the Hoyas 33-7 and finished with a 21-3 advantage in penalty corners. Louisville goalkeeper senior Heather Bustanoby finished the match with four saves. Georgetown's Pereira had 11 stops in the game. Georgetown drops to 1-18 (1-5 BIG EAST).
U of L will face No. 12 Stanford in a neutral game played at the University of Maryland Sunday at noon.
