LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior Julie Anne Smith scored a pair of goals to lift the 14th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 3-2 win over visiting Providence in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The Cardinals improve to 8-6 (3-2 BIG EAST) while the Friars drop to 5-8 (2-3).
The game was televised by WHAS11 and will air following the Monday, Oct. 19 Jimmy Kimmel show.
"This was a good outcome for us today," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I thought we played a great game. Providence is a solid team with very good penalty corner defense which challenged us today. I was glad to see us meet the challenge and rebound from a tough loss at Ohio State on Wednesday."
The Cards wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Sophomore Hayley Turner connected on a rebound off of Providence goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain's pads for her team-leading ninth goal of the season to give Louisville a 1-0 lead at the 2:16 mark. Less than three minutes later, Smith sent junior Nicole Youman's pass into the cage to make it a 2-0 game.
The Friars answered midway through the first half when Adrienne Marois' sent a penalty corner pass to Ashlyn Hudson who cut the lead to 2-1. Kelly Grogan's shot from the top of the circle knotted the game at 2-2.
The teams entered the break with a 2-2 tie after Louisville outshot Providence 7-2 and held an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The game remained tied through the first 25 minutes of the second half before Smith tipped Turner's shot for her second goal of the game and third of the season to give the Cards the 3-2 win.
Providence made a final push in the final 30 seconds of regulation, but Bustanoby came up big, stopping Nellie Poulin and Jaime Lipski's shots to preserve the win in regulation.
Bustanoby (8-6) collected three saves, while Chamberlain (4-7) had seven stops for the Friars in a game which pitted the 2009 Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Players of the Year against each other. In the game, Louisville outshot Providence 14-7 and held a 14-2 corner advantage.
Louisville will close the weekend with a game against No. 4 Wake Forest on Sunday at1 p.m. The Cards will celebrate senior day by honoring goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby and forwards Kayla May and Julie-Anne Smith. Fans are encouraged to wear white as the Cards attempt to set a regular season attendance record mark of over 700.
