LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Shannon Smyth's goal in the 72nd minute knotted the match at one, and neither team could net the game winner as the 22nd-ranked University of Louisville women's soccer team tied Purdue 1-1 Sunday afternoon in Cardinal Park.
"I thought we were extremely effective in the first half, but we could not reward ourselves with the game winner," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes.
Cardinal (1-1-1) freshman keeper Chloe Kiefer made an early stop on Purdue's Alexys Tryba.
Mallory Lampson sent a corner for the Cards into the six, and on the ensuing scramble, Caitlin Rehder directed a shot on goal that was deflected out by a Purdue (3-1-1) defender to retain the scoreless tie.
The Boilermakers took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when they converted off a corner kick.
Kellie Phillips served a ball into the middle of the six and Felicia Schroeder headed it into the goal for her second goal of the season.
"Unfortunately there was a missed assignment on the goal," Ferguson-Dayes added.
The Cards had a number of good scoring opportunities in the first half with work in the attacking third by Giselle Mangal, and Rehder but were unable to net the equalizer.
The Cardinals outshot the Boilermakers 8-5 in the first half, and shots on goal were 4-2 in favor of the Cards.
"In the second half we abandoned the simple things that we did well and gave up possession in the middle third," said Ferguson-Dayes.
Early in the second half, Rehder again tested Purdue keeper Jenny Bradfisch but was turned away in the 49th minute.
In the 64th minute, Lampson bent a corner from the near side that glanced off the far post, and the rebound off the foot of Smyth was blocked.
Kate Cunningham sent a shot on net minutes later, but Bradfisch made the stop.
The Cards tied the game at the 71:08 mark. Senior Jessica Mello gathered a loose ball and fed it to Smyth, who noticed that the Purdue keeper was playing up, and lifted a shot over the head of Bradfisch and into the back of the net from about 40 yards out. It was Smyth's first goal of the season.
After the goal, Lampson broke in on the left side of the 18 and sent a hard shot that went wide left.
Kiefer turned away two more shots by Purdue, as did Bradfisch in the second half, sending the match into extra time.
The shot margin increased to 15-8 in the second half with shots on goal even at five apiece.
In the first overtime, Smyth looked to end the match, but her volley from outside the 18 glanced off the crossbar in the 91st minute and she later sent a shot wide left.
Kate Cunningham had her shot blocked in the 96th minute by the Boilermakers and the rebound was sent on net by Kelsey Hunyadi but Bradfisch made the stop. Lindsay Boling's header off a cross was just wide in the final minute of the first overtime period, sending the game to a second overtime. UofL outshot Purdue 5-0 in the first overtime.
The Cardinals fought off consecutive corners in the defensive end in the 105th minute.
Smyth added another shot on goal in the 108th minute and the Boilermakers countered with two shots late, one that was blocked and a second that was forced wide.
The Boilermakers countered with a 4-1 shot advantage in the second OT.
The Cardinals totalled 29 shots, the most since they had 33 against Morehead State on October 15, 2004, to the Boilermakers' 17. Kiefer made seven saves to 10 by Bradfisch.
UofL will next host nationally ranked Oklahoma State Friday at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
