LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The eleventh-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team was edged by No. 6 Iowa 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
"I really feel that today puts us a step closer to understanding what it takes to win a championship," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "I am proud of how we fought and really stayed in the game today, but in order to win a championship, you need to be able to win back-to-back tough games. Our team continues to grow and develop with each and every game."
After a scoreless first half, the Hawkeyes' Lauren Pfeiffer connected on a penalty corner with assists from Sarah Pergine at the 39:51 mark for the only goal of the game.
Iowa finished the game with a 17-4 advantage in shots and outcornered the Cards 12-2. Louisville's goalkeeper junior Heather Bustanoby collected 10 saves in the cage while Iowa's Lissa Munley had two stops. The Hawkeyes improve to 8-2 on the season.
U of L (5-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) will play their ninth-ranked opponent this season when they travel to Piscataway, N.J. to play No. 17 Rutgers (9-1, 1-1) on Friday, Oct. 3. Following that game, the Cards will visit West Long Branch, N.J., where they will face Monmouth (1-8) on Sunday.
