PISCATAWAY, N.J. - - Junior Julie Anne Smith scored the only goal of the game as No. 11 Louisville defeated No. 16 Rutgers 1-0 in a BIG EAST Conference field hockey contest Friday evening at RU Stadium Complex. The Cards improve to 6-4 (2-1) while the Scarlet Knights drop to 9-2 (1-2).
The first half of play saw a scoreless tie as Rutgers outshot Louisville 10-2 behind an 8-2 penalty corner advantage.The Cards responded in the second half, holding a 6-4 edge in shots with each team being awarded four corners.
Louisville would find the back of the cage off of its fifth penalty corner of the game at the 61:58 mark. The shot appeared to be coming from junior Kayla May, who faked a shot. Sophomore Nicole Youman took the ball and pushed it out to her left and back to Julie Anne Smith. The junior fired an attempt as the ball ricocheted off an RU player's shin and into the cage.
U of L goalkeeper junior Heather Bustanoby collected five saves in the win. Lauren Decerbo finished with one stop in the cage for Rutgers.
Louisville will take on Monmouth Sunday at noon.
