LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville freshman Kristin Falovo was named CRCA Second Team All-America by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association last week becoming the third Cardinal rower in school history to earn such an honor. It marks the second straight year a Louisville rower has earned All-America honors as Falovo joins former Cardinal Beth Daunhauer, who was a second team selection in 2007.
Falovo, a native of Thorold, Ont., and one of only 43 rowers to earn All-America honors, rowed in the Cards' varsity eight boat throughout her first collegiate season leading the Louisville crew to a runner-up finish at the BIG EAST Championships and a berth in the petite final at the South/Central Region Sprints.
"Kristin was able to earn a seat in the varsity eight boat upon her arrival at Louisville," said Cards' head coach Larua Fogt. "Having a freshman awarded with this honor bodes well for our future. Kristin possesses a great work ethic and has a great deal of strength, and she will continue to grow in all areas. She has the ability to continue being a contributor to the program over the next three years."
Falovo also earned All-Region Second Team honors with her 2008 performances, while junior Mallory Hamman, a native of Clarksville, Ind., was named First Team All-Region for her 2008 season.
"Mallory did a great job as the stroke for the varsity eight crew through the entire season," Fogt said. "Starting her rowing career as a novice walk-on and then moving to stroking in the varsity eight boat by her junior year is a great testament to Mallory's work ethic and determination to succeed."
Along with the All-America and All-Region honors, Louisville also had 10 athletes earn CRCA National Scholar-Athlete honors. The group included senior Kathryn Hagglund, juniors Anna Ardiel, Laura Cers, Lisa Grace, Mallory Hamman, Allison Pelette and Liz Van Zeyl, and sophomores Ashley Edwardson, Samantha Seldon and Kelly Traynor. The requirements to be eligible for the award includes a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
"To have a 3.5 GPA is a great accomplishment for any student, but when you tack on 20 hours a week of intense training, competing and traveling and that accomplishment is even greater," Fogt said. "I am very proud of these ladies and they continue to represent the university and this athletic department with high levels of class and respect. I greatly appreciate all the hard work and energy Anthony Wright, our academic advisor, puts toward making sure our athletes excel in the classroom."
