Demerae Christianson, a top assistant at the University of Maryland the past two seasons, has joined the University of Louisville Swimming & Diving staff, head coach Arthur Albiero announced today.
"Adding Demerae Christianson to our already successful staff represents another major significant step for our program," said Albiero. "She brings the fire of a tough competitor who has experienced success at the highest levels of our sport including being named Captain of the US National Team for the World University Games and also a member of three NCAA Championship titles. Her ability to relate to the student-athletes, along with her personality and winning attitude, is a perfect fit for our program."
While at Maryland, Christianson worked with several Olympic Trial Qualifiers and ACC Finalists. Christianson began her coaching career in 2005 serving one season as an assistant at her alma mater, Auburn, where she helped lead the Tigers to their fourth NCAA Title. While at Auburn she was part of a staff that fostered numerous NCAA Champions and Olympic Medalists.
A 2004 graduate, Christianson herself was a part of three of those championship teams as the Tigers won three straight from 2002-2004. A 15-time NCAA All-American, Christianson won gold in the 100 fly for the USA in Korea at the 2003 World University Games. And in 2005 for the World University Games in Turkey, she was named the USA team's captain. There, she won gold in the 4x100 medley relay and bronze in the 100 Butterfly. In 2004, she placed third in the Olympic trials in the 100 Butterfly clocking a time of 59.09 Long Course Meters.
"I am excited for this opportunity to be apart of such a great University and program that is excelling both academically and athletically. I am really looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence that is here at the University of Louisville." Christianson stated.
A native of Gillette, Wyoming, Christianson earned her degree in Criminology from Auburn University in 2004.
