TULSA, Okla. - The University of Louisville's freshman doubles team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs fell to Maryland's eighth-ranked Boris Fetbroyt and Andy Orbran Thursday in the NCAA Doubles Championship round of 32 at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
"For a set and three-quarters, Austen and Simon played their best doubles match of the year at the right time," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They were up 4-2 and had match point later in the set and had a makeable shot with a great look at a soft, high serve and they didn't execute. After that miss, Maryland's players turned the match around.
Austen Childs and fellow Simon Childs (no relation) won the first set 6-3, but the eighth-ranked Terrapin duo edged them 7-6 in the second set and took the third 6-2 to advance to the round of 16.
The Cards' freshman tandem close the season with a 10-5 overall mark as Louisville's No. 1 team and stand in at No. 47 in the ITA doubles rankings. On Feb. 26, they debuted at No. 23, becoming the first freshman team in Louisville history to earn a top 25 ranking.
"When your freshman team is one of the only two doubles teams comprised of freshmen in the NCAA doubles championship, makes you proud," said Ecarma. "They almost upset the fifth-seeded team in the tournament and had a chance to make it to sweet 16. Hopefully they will learn from this and become a seeded team next year."
