Men's Tennis Takes Down Hokies 5-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated No. 31 Virginia Tech 5-2 to hand the Hokies (9-1) their first loss of the season Thursday evening at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
"I am extremely proud of our singles play today," said U of head coach Rex Ecarma. "We defeated a great Virginia Tech team who had not lost all season. When you play a team like that, they expect to win and that can be intimidating. They dominated us in doubles and we got down early in singles. At one point, I was hoping to just get on the board. It just goes to show that this team can be very special. I don't think they even know how good they can be. Alejandro Calligari is our player of the match today. We're going to enjoy this win."
Virginia Tech jumped to a 1-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. Pedro Graber and Nicolas Delgado teamed to beat the 27th ranked team of Austen Childs and Simon Childs 8-5 at No. 1. Albert Larregola and Brandon Corace defeated Pablo Camacho and Viktor Maksimcuk 8-2 at the two-spot. Yoann Re and Sebastien Jacques topped Alejandro Calligari and James McArthur 8-5 at the No. 3 seed.
In singles, Simon Childs quickly tied the match at 1-1 with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Graber at No. 2. Jacques gave Tech a 2-1 lead by beating Robert Rotaru 6-1, 6-4 at the five-spot. David Simon made it a 2-2 match, defeating Delgado 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
The remaining matches went into three sets. No. 42 Austen Childs picked up a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over No. 54 Larregola to give the Cards a 3-2 lead. Calligari clinched the win with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 decision over Corace at No. 6. Maksimcuk closed the match by defeating Re 1-6, 7-5, 7-5 at the three-seed.
The Cardinals (12-3) will travel to Bloomington, Ind., on March 18 to play the Hoosiers.
