LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Southern Illinois 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards (9-2) will face UT-Martin in the second half of a double header Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
"I re-engaged the All-BIG EAST doubles team of David Simon and Robert Rotaru and it worked out well today," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "They look like a team that wants to play together and are confident with each other. Tim Barnoud has been playing very well in practice the past four weeks. Today he started off a little shaky, but played well. He is an example of what hard work can accomplish and is today's player of the match. Simon Childs looked extremely aggressive in singles and moved around the court so much better. The whole team played very efficiently today."
The Cardinals took the doubles point to start the match. The 23rd-ranked team of freshmen Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Lukas Waked and Anton Leonenko 8-4 at the top seed. Sophomore David Simon and senior Robert Rotaru combined to beat Mariano Restrepo and Hugo Vidal 8-3 at the two-spot. The Salukis' Felipe Villasenior and Sebastian Rubiano topped freshmen Viktor Maksimcuk and Alejandro Calligari 8-6 for SIU's only win of the match.
U of L swept the singles points in straight sets to complete the match. Austen Childs, No. 40 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Waked at the top seed. David Simon edged Restrepo 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2. Maksimcuk defeated Vidal 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Simon Childs picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Villasenor 6-2, 6-3 at the five-spot. Sophomore Tim Barnoud beat Chase Miller 7-5, 6-1.
