Cardinal Swimming Advance 28 to Finals After Day Three Prelims

The University of Louisville will be sending 28 swimmers into the finals this evening as the third day of preliminary competition at the 2008 BIG EAST Championship at the Nassau County Aquatics Center concluded Friday morning in East Meadow, NY.
Of the 28, 15 are in the A-finals and three are seeded first going into this evening's competition. Junior Andrei Radzionau had the fastest qualifying time in the 200-free with a time of 1:36.55. Leslie Van Winkle was tops in the 400-IM in 4:15.99 and Carlos Van Isschot was fastest of the field in the 100-back.
In the first event, Van Winkle drafted off early leader Ashlee Edgell of Notre Dame through the fly and backstroke. Leslie took the lead in the first 50 yards of the breaststroke and then increased her lead to more than two body lengths for the win. Sophomore Amanda Henleben snuck into the finals with a strong swim of 4:25.78, almost five seconds faster than her qualifying time of 4:30.98. Junior Abby Miller was ninth overall with a time of 4:26.30. Jenny Schimenti also qualified for the B-finals with a time of 4:31.23.
For the men in the 400-IM, freshman Shane Lichtenberg had an early lead during the butterfly leg but WVU's Michael Walker made a explosive move and ended up outpacing the field by more than four seconds. Lichtenberg will be the top qualifier in the B-final. Luke Wakefield will also have a chance for a second swim with a time of 4:07.06. In the 100-fly, freshman Nicole Landisch earned a berth in the B-finals with a time of 57.25. For the men, Adam Madarassy qualified third with an NCAA B-cut time of 48.12, winning his heat and leading wire to wire.. Teammate Rafal Kuchta will also swim in the A-final with a time of 49.52. Sophomore Peyton Bobo will swim in the B-finals, turning in a time of 50.24.
In the 200-free, freshman Sarah Andrews had a strong finish to turn the third fastest swim of the morning and make an NCAA B-cut in a hotly contested event. It took a conference record and NCAA A-cut time to win that prelim which Christa Riggins of Notre Dame turned in the same heat as Andrews. Liz Halet will swim in the B-final.
Andrei Radzionau was the class of the men's 200-free turning in a time of 1:36.10, two seconds faster than the runner up.
In the 100-breast, three Cardinals will swim in the finals when Therese Bergstrom, Anna Dishuck and Johanna Nyysti finished third, fourth and fifth for the A-final. Freshman Kristi Eramo will swim in the B-finals. For the men, Vali Preda, Chris Lindauer and Sergiu Dahgid all gained the A-finals with Preda and Lindauer making NCAA B-cut times in the process.
In the 100-back, sophomore Alana Berrocal made the A-finals with a time of 56.56. Nicole Cindric and Karen Criss earned a second swim in the B-finals as well. For the men, Carlos Van Isschot and Andrei Teudean made it a one-two sweep with Carlos making an NCAA-B cut with a time of 48.47. Teudean went 49.58. Peyton Bobo gained the A-finals in a tight field. Chase Grimes and Paul Augustus will also swim tonight in the B-finals.
