LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville lacrosse head coach Kellie Young announced the signing of three prep student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent during the fall signing period. Brooke Campbell from Berwyn, Pa., Katie Oliverio from Silver Spring, Md., and Meghan Ryan from Glen Arm, Md., signed with the Cards for 2009, the Cards' first official BIG EAST season.
"Our staff is thrilled with the class of 2012," Young said. "We have brought in fantastic players who will challenge our existing talent, in turn raising our overall level of play. We are delighted that these three student-athletes and their families will be joining the Cardinal family. We only get stronger as more young women find out what Louisville Lacrosse is all about."
The Cards are currently preparing for their inaugural season with a 24-player roster that features no seniors and includes one junior, two sophomores, one redshirt first year and 20 true first year players. U of L will open the 2008 season on Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. ET, at home against Bryant University.
Here are information capsules on each of the Cards' three signees announced on Jan. 24:
- Brooke Campbell - Attack
Berwyn, Pa. (Conestoga HS)
- Club Team: Ultimate Goal
- Honorable Mention All-America, Second Team All-Main Line and Second Team All-Central in 2007... National Tournament Upper Atlantic Team 1, First Team Chester County, First Team All-Main Line, First Team All-AACA, Honorable Mention All-America and earned U-19 tryout in 2006... All-Main Line in 2005... Also lettered in field hockey and was named team's most valuable offensive player.
- Coach Young on Brooke Campbell: "Brooke has a natural ease about her game -- a fluid attacker who moves exceptionally well off ball. We are hoping to add to her understanding of both the overall game and her prospects as a finisher to help build one of the fiercest scorers in Division I lacrosse."
- Katie Oliverio - Midfield
Silver Spring, Md. (Georgetown Visitation Preparatory)
- Club Team: Ultimate PlayHer
- National Tournament Mid-Atlantic Team 3, First Team All-ISL, First Team All-DC and team's leading scorer in 2007... Also lettered in soccer and basketball.
- Coach Young on Katie Oliverio: "Katie O is a remarkable all around athlete who, although already a solid lacrosse player, has only touched the surface of her potential with the game. She has tremendous endurance as a midfielder, a good eye for options on the field and shows great maturity in handling the ball. She and Brooke (Campbell) together will make a powerful one-two punch on our offensive end."
- Meghan Ryan - Midfield
Glen Arm, Md. (Notre Dame Preparatory)
- Club Team: Rome
- IAAM All-Star, Second Team All-County in 2007... National Tournament Mid-Atlantic Team in 2006.
- Coach Young on Meghan Ryan: "One of the top midfielders in the country, we are thrilled that Meg chose Louisville to continue her education and love of lacrosse. She is one of the feistiest players I have ever recruited -- running through ground balls, transitioning the ball out of the defensive end and jump starting her team's fast break offense. She's a competitor who will fight for anything in front of her...what a great asset to add to our team."
