
Field Hockey Set for BIG EAST Road Trip

The 16th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team will go on the road for a pair of BIG EAST Conference matchups this weekend. First, the Cards (6-4, 1-0) travel to Storrs, Conn. to face third-ranked Connecticut (10-1, 0-1) on Friday. Providence College (7-3, 1-0) awaits the Cardinals on Sunday for a rematch of the 2006 BIG EAST regular season co-champions.

Last Meeting: Nov. 4, 2006 - UConn defeated Louisville 3-2 in OT in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. During the regular season, the Huskies defeated the Cards 3-1 at Trager Stadium

Series Record: Louisville leads 3-0
Last Meeting: U of L defeated Providence 4-1 at Trager Stadium. 2006 senior Jessica Javelet had a hat trick and Casey Diener also scored.
The teams shared the 2006 BIG EAST regular season league title, but U of L earned the top seed in the tournament due to the head to head meeting.

Last Up for Louisville
The Cards are currently on a season-high three game winning streak. U of L is coming off of a 3-1 win over Saint Louis. The Billikens took an early 1-0 lead, but Louisville freshmen Tuli Lim and Nicole Youman and senior Beth Latham scored to put the Cards ahead.
Prior to that, U of L opened the 2007 BIG EAST season with a 2-1 double overtime win over Syracuse. The Orange took a 1-0 lead, but sophomore Kayla May tied the game. Despite outshooting Syracuse 27-7, the Cardinals went to two overtime periods before senior Allison Maffitt delivered the game winner.

Youth is the word for the 2007 Cardinals. Seven freshmen have seen regular playing time and four have been starters. Julie Barton and Nicole Youman are tied for second on the team with two goals apiece.
Schaefer Named League Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Schaefer was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24. Schaefer, a junior back from Millersville, Pa., played solid defense, helping the Cardinals to a 2-0 record, including a 2-1 double overtime win against Syracuse. Schaefer was instrumental in limiting opponents to 10 combined shots and two goals on the weekend. In addition to her defensive efforts, she also dished out two assists in the 3-1 win over Saint Louis. Schaefer now leads the team with six assists.
Avila Hitting the (Record) Books
Janelle Avila stands at second on the U of L career points list with 101. With her two goals in the game against Vermont, she became only the second Cardinal to accumulate 100 points or more in her career. 2006 graduate Jessica Javelet holds the all-time record with 176.
Avila also stands at third place in the with 37 career goals, placing her one behind Sherry Effinger second place tally of 38. Javelet holds the record with 69.
Avila also needs one more assist to tie for third on the school's career assist list. She currently has 27 feeds and needs one more to tie Lisa Wasser for third. Javelet holds the all-time mark with 38.
You've Gotta Play the Best
The Cardinals are in the midst of a challenging schedule, having already played five teams currently ranked in the top 20. Thus far, all four of Louisville's losses have come to teams ranked in the top 20 including: No. 3 Iowa, No. 6 Michigan State, No. 12 Michigan and No. 13 Duke. Still ahead are No. 3 Connecticut. No. 19 Virginia and No. 20 Stanford. Indiana, Villanova and Ohio State are also receiving votes in the coaches poll.
