LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 16th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Saint Louis 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The Billikens struck first just five minutes into the game when Christine Frampus collected a rebound from Jacklyn McGranahan's shot and drove the ball into the cage past Cardinal sophomore goalkeeper Heather Bustanoby.
Louisville freshman Tuli Lim connected on junior Lauren Schaefer's feed from the right side of the cage to tie the game at the 20:58 mark.
The teams entered the break tied at 1-1 with the Cards outshooting the Billikens 14-3 and holding a 6-0 advantage in penalty corners.
The Cardinals had several opportunities to pull ahead in the second half, firing off seven shots in the first 15 minutes before senior Beth Latham converted on a penalty stroke at the 52:57 mark in the game.
Two minutes later, freshman Nicole Youman scored on a penalty corner pass from Schaefer to make it a 3-1 game.
U of L finished the game outshooting Saint Louis 29-3 and with an 11-0 corner advantage. Bustanoby had two saves in the cage. SLU goalkeeper Amy Wasserman turned in a stellar performance, registering 17 stops. The Billikens drop to 2-8 on the season.
"This was our second consecutive game going against a very good goalkeeper, which was a good test for our attack," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Our team stayed on task, you couldn't ask for more as far as consistent team focus. At times we had some wonderful attack buildup and ball movement. We intend to take the lessons we learned this weekend and build on them as we prepare to enter into another tough weekend of conference play."
Louisville (6-4) will go on the road to face BIG EAST foes No. 4 Connecticut and Providence.
