
Missouri Sweeps Softball 5-2 and 4-2

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team fell to visiting Missouri 5-2 and 4-2 in a doubleheader Wednesday evening at Ulmer Stadium. The Cardinals drop to 16-15, while Missouri improves to 25-17 on the season.
In game one, the Cards took a 2-0 lead in the third when Kristen Wadwell led off with a double and scored on Audrey Rendon's triple. Brooke McCrain's base hit sent Rendon home.
The Tigers put up a four-spot in the sixth Leanne Bower, Andee Allen and delivered back-to-back singles to set up Amanda Renth's three-run shot over the left field fence. Sarah Stringer reached on a fielder's choice, moved to third on Jen Bruck's double and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kathy Masterson to make it a 4-2 game.
Missouri tacked on another run in the seventh when Julie Silver walked, moved to third on Bowers' single and scored on a hit by Allen.
Wadwell (2-4) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out three in 5.1 innings. Kassie Stanfill allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out one in 1.2 innings. The Cards had six hits in the game and were led by Wadwell's 2 for 2, one run performance at the plate.
Jen Bruck (9-4) picked up the complete-game win, giving up two earned runs on six hits and striking out six. Bowers led the Tiger offense, going 3 for 4 with a run. Renth finished 2 for 3 with four RBI.
In game two, Missouri jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Allen reached on a fielder's choice, Renth followed with a walk and Micaela Minner registered an RBI single.
The Cards answered in the home half of the second. McCrain doubled to lead off the inning. Skye Miller, running for McCrain, scored on Kristi Cunningham's double.
U of L took a 2-1 lead in the third when Melissa Roth reached safely on a bunt single, Courtney Moore and Kristi Cunningham delivered base hits to load the bags for Wadwell's RBI single.
Mizzou regained the lead in the fourth when A.J. White singled and Silver powered a two-run shot over the right field wall to make it a 3-2 game.
The Tigers threatened to increase the lead in the fifth when Minner singled and Stringer doubled to place runners at second and third with no outs. Wadwell struck out Bruck, Minner was thrown out at the plate when Kathy Masterson reached on a fielder's choice and White grounded out to end the threat.
Missouri added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Minner singled, took second on Stringers sacrifice bunt and came home on Bruck's single to make the score 4-2.
Stanfill (8-5) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and striking out one in 4.0 innings. Wadwell gave up one unearned run on three hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings. Offensively, the Cards had 12 hits and were led by Cunningham who went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Moore was 2 for 3 in the game.
Jana Hainey (4-5) got the win, holding the Cards scoreless and striking out one in 2.2 innings. Megan Dennis picked up her second save of the season, allowing three hits and striking out one. Minner was 4 for 4 with a run and an RBI.
U of L will open BIG EAST Conference play Friday when Villanova visits Ulmer Stadium for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The Cards will play host to Rutgers Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
