
Softball Defeats Kansas 7-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Freshman Melissa Roth went 3 for 3 and scored two runs as the University of Louisville softball team defeated Kansas 7-1 Friday on the first day of the Red and Black Tournament. Louisville improves to 4-6 while Kansas drops to 5-5-1 on the season.
"Kansas is a good team with good pitcher and I was happy with how we were aggressive and attacked at the plate," said U of L head coach Sandy Pearsall. "I was also pleased with Catherine Bishop's performance today, she came in and did a great job."
The Cards took an early lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the inning, Courtney Moore doubled, took third on Roth's single and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Roth moved to third on the pitch and came home on a Jayhawk error to make it a 2-0 game.
Kansas responded in the top of the third when Dougie McCaulley was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a two-out double by Elle Pottorf. Amanda Jobe followed with an RBI single to pull the Jayhawks within one run and place runners at second and third, but Louisville starter Kassie Stanfill retired the next batter to end the inning.
The Cards broke the with a four-run fifth inning. Kristi Cunningham led off the frame with a single up the middle. Audrey Rendon and Candi Hicks reached on bunt singles to load the bases for Roth's RBI hit which scored Cunningham. Brittany York stepped up to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing double to make it a 6-1 game.
Brooke McCrain led off the sixth with a solo home run over the center field fence for the final 7-1 tally.
Catherine Bishop (2-4) got the win, holding Kansas scoreless on three hits and striking out seven in 4.0 innings of relief. Stanfill surrendered one earned run on three hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings. The Cards had nine hits in the game, led by Roth's 3 for 3 performance at the plate.
Kassie Humphreys (4-1) took the loss, giving up six runs, five of them earned on nine hits and striking out five in 5.0 innings. Reliever Valerie George gave up one earned run in the sixth inning.
U of L will face Kent State Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium. In the first game of the tournament, Kent State defeated Kansas 4-1.
