LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 48 Louisville Cardinal men's tennis team travels to Blacksburg, Va., for two matches. On Friday, the Cardinals (5-5) face No. 52 Virginia Tech at 2:00 p.m. Louisville takes on No. 65 Brown University on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
"Brown and Virginia Tech pose two more big challenges for our team," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We're going to prepare very hard this week to start getting back on track, especially on the doubles side. What hurt us last week was we fell behind early in the matches and it was an uphill battle all the way. Hopefully our doubles players will respond and give us a lead this weekend because both of these teams are positioning themselves for an NCAA tournament bid."
Senior Slavko Radman, No. 71 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, has posted a 12-5 record and is 4-2 at the Cardinals at No. 1 singles player. He has wins over No. 52 Brady Crosby of Western Michigan and No. 71 Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech. In doubles play, he and senior Damar Johnson are the No. 24 ranked doubles team in the nation and have combined for a 14-5 record (5-2 dual matches). Sophomore Robert Rotaru leads the team in overall singles wins with a 15-8 record and is 6-2 in dual wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are 6-1 this season, suffering their only loss to No. 42 Middle Tennessee. No. 67 Arvid Puranen leads the Hokies with a 5-1 dual record at No. 1 singles. No. 70 Albert Larregola (11-2 overall) and No. 87 Nicolas Delgado (15-5 overall) also significantly contribute to the team.
The Brown University Bears are undefeated at 5-0 in dual play. They are lead by senior and No. 82- ranked player Dan Hanegby, with a 5-0 record at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Hanegby pairs up with Chris Lee to form the No. 25 doubles team. They are 9-1 overall (2-0) in dual play.
After the trip to Virginia, the Cardinals travel to North Carolina to play at No. 27 Wake Forest on Feb. 24 and at No. 35 North Carolina State on Feb. 25.
