MIAMI - - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Illinois 8-0 Sunday on the final day of the FIU Diamond Fun & Sun Classic.
The Illini jumped to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first Angelena Mexicano doubled and scored on a single by Kisten Martin.
Illinois put up a six-spot in the fourth when Martin singled and was safe at second on a Cardinal error when Makenzie Smith reached on a fielder's choice. Kaitlin Gaitros entered the game as a pinch-runner for Martin and scored on Lana Armstrong's base hit. Smith crossed the plate on another Louisville miscue to make it a 3-0 game. Pinch-hitter Sydney Lisy followed with a two-run single. Shanna Diller's infield hit made it a 6-0 game.
The Illini capped the scoring in the fifth inning when Kisten Martin drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on Smith's single. Armstrong followed with a base hit. An error on the play sent both Martin and Smith home for the final 8-0 score.
Louisville's Catherine Bishop (0-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs, only one earned, on seven hits and struck out four in 4.0 innings. Kristen Wadwell allowed one unearned run on two hits in the fifth. Candi Hicks and Brittany York each went 1 for 2. York and Audrey Rendon were named to the All-Tournament team.
Vicky Brown (1-0) picked up the shutout win, allowing two hits and striking out three in 5.0 innings. Martin finished 2 for 2 with two runs and 1 RBI. The Illini improve to 3-2.
U of L (2-4) will travel to Fresno, Calif., for a three-game series against No. 20/21 Fresno State Feb. 16-17.
