LOUISVILLE, - The University of Louisville men's tennis team wrapped up a very successful fall season which head coach Rex Ecarma hopes to parlay into a productive 2008 campaign for the young Cardinals.
Coach Rex Ecarma on the 2007-08 fall season
"One of the highlights was freshman sensation Austen Childs making an immediate impact on the court with singles wins over six ranked players.
Alejandro Calligari became the first freshman in U of L history to win the Louisville Fall Invitational.
I have dubbed this freshman class the `Fantastic Four, because as a whole, I truly believe they are one of the top freshmen classes in the country.
Sophomore David Simon also had a great showing at the Baylor Invitational, defeating the 81st ranked player and fall just short against the 18th-ranked player in the nation. He proved that he can compete with some of the best collegiate tennis players.
I was pleased with how well new assistant coach John Boetsch assimilated to the team and the overall program. He has been a great addition and the players really respect him.
Senior Pablo Camacho also had a good fall showing and I am impressed with his maturity and leadership potential.
Finally, I was pleased with how well the team performed at the Midwest Regional. Almost the entire group was affected by a stomach virus, but rallied and came out and battled to go undefeated on the first day. It showed a grit and determination that I am happy to have and I look forward to facing a tough 2008 dual match schedule with this group of guys."
The Cardinals open the spring season against Northwestern on January 18 at 5 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
