
Swimmers Continue to Make Splash at Purdue Invitational

The University of Louisville swimming and diving team continued to turn in strong performances in the second day of the Purdue Invitational with the women placing second and the men standing in third after two days of competition.
"It was a good night. We had an ok morning in prelims but we came out with a bang this evening," said Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach. "We had some great individual efforts and the depth that we have worked so hard to achieve is now showing signs of success for us. Our focus remains on preparing for the BIG EAST Championships which is why this format is conducive to our goals."
In the medley relay, the women's foursome of Whitney Campbell, Johanna Nyysti, Nicole Landisch and Liz Halet finished second and just missed setting a school record at 1:44.00. The men's team was disqualified on a controversial call.
In the 400-IM, Leslie VanWinkle set a new school record with a swim of 4:16.38 which was good for first and an NCAA B-cut. Abby Miller finished 7th and Amanda Henleben touched 8th as the third Cardinal in the finals. Leigh Smith was 9th and Jenny Schimenti place 10th.
"Leslie had a swim of historical significance in our program's development," said Albiero. "It was a special and inspired race.
In the men's 400-IM, Vali Preda just missed a school record at 3:56.57 in the victory in that event. Luke Wakefield finished 12th in 4:05.74.
In the 100-fly, Nicole Landisch came in second with a time of 56.28 with Jenny Schimenti finishing 20th in 58.18. For the men, Adam Madarassy finished second in 49.21 with Rafal Kuchta winning the consols in 50.36. Andrei Teudean was 13th in 51.11.
In the 200-free, Leslie VanWinkle was runnerup with a time of 1:50.08. Teammate Sarah Andrews was 9th at 1:57.27. Andrei Radzionau won the 200-free for the men with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:37.48. Rafal Kuchta was 18th and Shane Lichtenberg was 20th for the Cardinals.
Anna Dishuck was 5th in the 100-breast with a time of 1:04.61. Johanna Nyysti was 6th at 1:04.90. Kristi Eramo was ninth when she won the consols in 1:04.55. The men made it a 1-2-4 sweep in the 100-breast with senior Chris Lindauer blazing to a victory in 55.57. Vali Preda was in hot pursuit for second at 55.70 and Sergiu Dahgid was fourth at 56.02. Freshman Hal Graft was 14th in 58.76.
In the 100-back, Whitney Campbell finished 12th, Karen Criss was 13th and Nicole Cindric was 20th for the Cardinals. For the men, Carlos Van Isschot was second in 49.64 with Andrei Teudean touching 5th in 51.43. Peyton Bobo was 12th in 51.56. In the C-heat, Paul Augustus was first with a time of 51.84 and Hal Graft was fourth in that race.
In the 400-free relay, the women's team of Leslie VanWinkle, Sarah Andrews, Whitney Campbell and Liz Halet touched second in 7:28.78. The men's foursome of Adam Madarassy, Rafal Kuchta, Vali Preda and Andrei Radzionau were third in 6:41.60.
The competition continues Sunday morning with prelims in the final day of competition.
