For the first time in school history, the University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team is ranked by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's poll. The aquatic Cardinals are No. 30 in the poll.
The 2007-08 season is under way and so is the CSCAA Coaches' Poll. The first set of rankings, which is a prediction of a team's dual meet strength, has the Auburn Tigers and Texas Longhorns at the top of the women's and men's polls, respectively.
This year's poll will be published eight times and the champions will be crowned on February 27, 2008. Pollsters representing eight conferences along with two at-large voters have the task of ranking the top dual meet teams in the nation bi-weekly throughout the season. Additionally, the group of pollsters is completely different for the men's and women's rankings. This poll should not be confused with the results of the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving championships that will take place in March.
In it's opening meet, the University of Louisville had a strong performance against No. 11-ranked Tennessee. The Cardinals hit the blocks again this Friday evening against Miami of Ohio at 6 p.m. at the Ralph Wright Natatorium.
Coach Arthur Albiero's squad is coming off a banner year in 2006-07 when the Cardinals set 23 new school records, made 22 NCAA B-cuts, three World University Game participants and a FINA World Championships finalist who earned an Olympic berth for Beijing. Vali Preda was an NCAA finalist after the men's team finished third at the BIG EAST, the highest ever finish. And the success didn't just come in the water, both men and women's teams made CSCA Academic All-American status.
