
Men's Tennis Closes Play at 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, Ga. - - Senior Damar Johnson fell to Florida's Nestor Briceno Saturday in the second round of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Championship. Sophomore Robert Rotaru and freshmen Horatiu Oltean, Chris Herrlinger and Thibaut Barnoud advanced in the consolations brackets.
In the second round of the Division I main draw, Florida's Briceno edged Johnson 7-5 in the first set. Johnson answered with a 6-4 win in the second. Briceno took the match with a 6-1 win in the third to eliminate Johnson from the tournament.
In the consolation draw, Oltean topped Florida's Jordan Dolberg 7-5, 6-2 before falling to RJ Nagel of South Alabama 6-2, 6-1. Rotaru defeated Lander's Nicolas Legros 6-2, 6-0 and beat Virginia Tech's Alex Sergeev 6-3 in the first set. Sergeev retired in the second set. Barnoud and Ball State's John Freeman split sets, with Barnoud taking the first 6-1, Freeman winning the second 7-6(5) and Barnoud outlasting in the third 7-6(8). Furman's Andy Sobczyk went on to defeat Barnoud 6-2, 6-3 in the next round.
The Cards will travel to Charlottesville, Va. Sept 15-17 for the Virginia Invitational
